Cordially invites you to

AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE FEBRUARY 22-23, 2007

DOMINICAN-HAITIAN REPRESENTATIONS:
MIGRATIONS, CITIZENSHIP AND HUMAN RIGHTS

PANELS INCLUDE:

Migration and International Law: The Implications of the Case of Yean y
Bosico vs. Dominican Republic

Literary Solidarity: Dominican and Haitian Writers on Race, Migration and
History

State Discourse, Institutions and Citizenship

Civil Society Response to the Haitian Crisis in Dominican Republic

Currently, an estimated 500,000 Haitians immigrants and Dominican-Haitians
are living in the Dominican Republic without any form of identification,
which leaves them exposed to summary deportation to Haiti. Haitians
immigrants and Dominicans of Haitians descent occupy the most vulnerable
strata in Dominican society and economy. They work in the declining sugar
industries, agricultural production, construction, public works and informal
and domestic services. The Dominican Republic and Haiti share an island in
the Caribbean Sea, with a common legacy of colonialism, foreign
interventions, migrations and a long history of political and social
struggles. This two day conference aims to provide a forum to explore the
problem of representation of Haitian immigrants and Dominicans of Haitian
descent in the realms of law, policy, economy and culture. It would examine
the role that Dominican and Haitian Diasporas can play to find common
ground.
