Dear Colleagues--
I received the information below and am concerned about what it will
mean to those on both the academic and practitioner sides of our sector.

Do you feel that the nature of charitable work is such that the "free"
exchange of copyrighted materials in our field is a positive
development?

As many on this forum produce everything from class handouts, books, and
articles to case studies and journals in the field of philanthropy and
nonprofit management, how do you feel about the possibility that YOUR
materials could be used -- without permission or compensation -- in
distance learning classes?

> Senators Hatch (UT) and Leahy (VT) are sponsoring a bill that expands the
> Copyright Act's existing exemption for distance learning to include digital
> transmissions of copyrighted works. What this means in a nutshell is that
> any college, university or other learning institution that wishes to use
> any photograph, movie, music, art, software, article, book or any other
> creative work you have made in any way it deems fit for a distance learning
> course, can do so without any regard to the creator whatsoever.

> S.487 (the current education bill in the Senate) and thus fast track it
> right past anyone who might want to pay their electricity bill using $
> gained from creative works.
