XXI FESTIVAL DEL CARIBE
Fiesta del Fuego, dedicada a Panam�
Santiago de Cuba, del 3 al 9 de Julio del 2001

Muchas personas en el mundo viajan al Caribe atra�das por la imagen de un para�so donde est� a mano el sol, la vegetaci�n exhuberante y las playas con sus c�lidas aguas y finas arenas. Otras personas son atrapadas por la m�sica tradicional cubana que se pasea hoy por todos los confines del planeta... o por la belleza acriollada de las cubanas.
Pero hay otro modo de conocer qu� es realmente el Caribe y Santiago de Cuba ofrece cada mes de julio la posibilidad de asomarse a la regi�n a trav�s justamente de su cultura: de la m�sica, de la danza, la poes�a y las artes pl�sticas. En la historia, en la ciudad y en sus gentes Usted encontrar� las esencias del ser caribe�o.
Estas esencias, multiplicadas con la presencia de los grupos y de las personalidades art�sticas m�s representativas de espiritualidad tradicional del pa�s, est�n a su alcance en el Festival internacional del Caribe que, durante veinte a�os consecutivos ha mostrado fehacientemente otro modo de ver y de entender qu� somos. No se deje llevar por las apariencias, acomp��enos en esta cita con el Caribe y ver� que se puede disfrutar a la vez que conocernos mejor.

La Casa del Caribe y el Ministerio de Cultura, con el apoyo del Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos y la Uni�n de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba, convocan al XXI Festival del Caribe, Fiesta del Fuego, del 3 al 9 de Julio del a�o 20001 en Santiago de Cuba, dedicado a Panam�.

Desfile de la Serpiente (Apertura) D�a 5. 5:00 p.m. Participan las agrupaciones nacionales y extranjeras, desde la Plaza de Marte hasta la Calle Padre Pico, bajando por la calle Aguilera y evolucionando frente al Ayuntamiento en el Parque C�spedes. Comienza con un toque de invocaci�n a Eleggu� y Obbatal�, orishas del Pante�n Yoruba.

Desfile del Fuego. (Clausura). D�a 9. 6:00 p.m. Sale del Parque C�spedes, evoluciona frente al Ayuntamiento y luego una conga lo gu�a hasta la Alameda Jes�s Men�ndez, donde se encontrar� con otros grupos participantes. Comienza con un ritual congo en saludo a Nzambi, entidad suprema entre los practicantes de la religi�n de Palo Monte. Entrega de la Mpaca, emblema de la Fiesta del Fuego, al pa�s al que estar� dedicado el XXII Festival del Caribe.

Hurac�n de Tambores y la Quema del Diablo. D�a 9. desde las 8:30 p.m. Gran expansivo en la Alameda de la Avenida Jes�s Men�ndez; despedida de las agrupaciones y participantes en el Festival. Junto al mar, se le prende fuego a un gran diablo de fibras vegetales para dejar preparado el camino del pr�ximo encuentro feliz en el 2002.

Estimado colega:

Como se ha hecho costumbre desde hace m�s de tres lustros, el Taller internacional de religiosidad popular tradicional se realizar�, en esta ciudad, en el marco de la XXI va. edici�n del Festival del Caribe, del 3 al 9 de julio del 2001.

En esta ocasi�n, el Taller focalizar� su atenci�n en el tema del Espiritismo, en su acepci�n m�s abarcadora, sin excluir el tratamiento del resto de los sistemas de pensamiento m�gico-religioso cubanos y de fen�menos similares existentes en la regi�n del Caribe.

Los interesados en participar en calidad de ponentes, de asistentes o de observadores deber�n manifestarlo por escrito a la direcci�n postal o a la direcci�n electr�nica puestas al calce. Las propuestas de mesas redondas y las ponencias tendr�n como fecha tope de entrega el 30 de mayo del pr�ximo a�o.
La cuota de inscripci�n es de USA $60.00 para profesionales y de USA $30.00 para estudiantes extranjeros y de igual cantidad en M. N para cubanos. Se aclara que existe una capacidad limitada de matr�cula, la cual se har� por el orden consecutivo de solicitudes.

Adjuntamos la propuesta inicial del programa general del Taller, que sufrir� modificaciones l�gicas, aunque b�sicamente contiene elementos esenciales acad�micos y pr�cticos.

Conjunto Monumentario �l Cimarr�n�. Village of El Cobre. Paying homage to the Slave Rebellion.

Day 7th. of July, 5:00 pm. Plastic artistic performance with the artist Alberto Lescay Merencio.
Serpent Parade. (opening) 5th. of July, 5:00 pm. Foreign and National groups participate. The parade starts from Plaza de Marte, goes down to Padre Pico and performs in C�spedes park in front of the City Hall. The parade begins with an invocation to Eleggu� and Obatal� orishas of the Yoruba pantheon.
Fire Parade (closing) 9th. of July, 6:00 pm. Begins with a Congo drum playing invoking Nzambi, supreme deity of Palo Monte religion. After this invocation the Mpaka (emblem of the Feast of Fire) will be handed to the country to which the XXII Festival is dedicated. The parade starts at Parque C�spedes, performs in front of the City Hall then a Conga will guide the parade to the Alameda Jes�s Men�ndez where it will meet with other performing groups.
Drum Hurricane and Burning of the Devil. 9th. of July, 8:30 pm. . Great encounter of all participant groups in the Alameda Jes�s Men�ndez : farewell to all guests and participant groups. Next to the sea a huge figure made of straw, representing the Devil is set on fire in order to pave the way for a next and happy meeting in the year 2002.
