[rv gp apr 28/10/2003 10:20]

International day of the Creole / The Creole an asset for Haiti

   P-au-P, 27 October 03, [AlterPresse]--- A public debate on the theme "
The Creole in the Society of information " will be organized this Tuesday
28 October by the association of Friends of the World Diplomatic Haiti (AMD
- Haiti) to the auditorium of the Human Science Faculty (Harbor - Au -
Prince), in the setting of the commemoration of the International Day of
the Creole.

More of ten millions of people through the world speak
Creole. According to a document of the secretary of state to the
literacy, on every 4 créolophoneses in the world 3 are Haitian. Population
créolophone to French basis is estimated to about 8,5 millions of people,
of which seven millions and more in Haiti.

" We are a strength in quantity and in quality ", according to what
declared the year last Joseph Georges, Director Général of the Society of
animation and Communication (SAKS).

The Creole languages are especially to French, English, Portuguese,
Spanish and Dutch basis. In a numbering achieved in 1977, Ian Hancock,
doctor in linguistics to the university of the Texas, would count 127
Creole different in the world.

He/it exists however, according to linguists, of the Creole to multiple
bases. The Papiamento, in use in the Dutch Antilles, has like basis the
Portuguese, the Netherlander, the Spanish, the English and the French.

To the exception of Europe the Creole languages meet in numerous parts
of the world in Africa (Guinea-Bissau, the Sierra Leone, Republic
centrafricaine), in Asia of the southeast and Oceania (Philippines,
Singapore, New Caledonia), in America (Brazil, the Louisiana). The
population the most important créolophone is in Antilles and in the Guyana.

Among States having the Creole as language, three recognized him
officially: Haiti (more than 7 millions inhabitants); the archipelago of
Seychelles (70 000 inhabitants) and Vanuatu in Mélanésie (145 000
inhabitants). Nevertheless, the official recognition of the Creole by these
States doesn't suppress the depreciating prejudices automatically.

The Haitian Creole, according to linguists, was born of contact between
the French colonists, following the French colonization of Haiti toward
1625, and the African ethnieses. «Taking account of the present constraints
of globalization, the future of Haiti passes by a total struggle for the
defense of the Creole culture», declared the economist Haitian Camille
Charlmers last year.

The Creole word comes from the Latin «criare», meaning «servant fed in
the house». In a first time, it has been used to designate the white child
been born and elevated in the European colonies. Thereafter, the Creole
word has been used to designate the black population and the language of
this population. [rv gp apr 28/10/2003 10:20]
