Antonio Gaztambide particip� recientemente en el IX Festival
Antropol�gico
Puerto Rico es el centro del Caribe
Para Gaztambide la historiograf�a y la tradici�n puertorrique�a siempre
se han visto como algo distinto.
Partiendo del tema de la relaci�n de Puerto Rico con el Caribe ,
Antonio Gaztambide, un historiador boricua, que visit� recientemente el
pa�s, analiz� las diversas implicaciones que sugiere la frase, entre
otros aspectos vinculados con la historia puertorrique�a de cara al
resto de las islas que integran el Caribe.
Gaztambide, quien particip� en una jornada del IX Festival Antropol�gico
de Culturas Afroamericanas que se celebra en el pa�s, indic� que lo
primero que se interpreta es la comparaci�n de Puerto Rico y el Caribe
como elementos distintos.
El catedr�tico aclara que es err�neo tratar la Isla del Encanto como
algo diferente, porque la isla no s�lo es parte del Caribe, sino su
centro. No digo que es el centro en sentido hegem�nico, sino a partir
de una oraci�n que a trav�s de los a�os se ha insertado en la formaci�n
escolar y que una gran parte de los puertorrique�os comparte y dice que
Puerto Rico es la menor de las Antillas Mayores y la mayor de las
Antillas Menores , explic�, que plante� que Borinquen ejerce el rol de
la hermana mayor de las islas menores .
Gaztambide plantea que por medio a la expresi�n se deja al desnudo que
para los puertorrique�os el Caribe es un sin�nimo de las Antillas y
evidencia la amplitud de significados sobre la historia y compara su
experiencia con la del resto del Caribe.
Gaztambide tambi�n toc� el tema de las diferencias entre las islas de
las Antillas Mayores y Menores puntualiz� sobre la identidad
afroamericana y la necesidad de distanciarse de la idea de que se trata
de una mera presencia o herencia.
Somos culturas afroamericanas con un mayor o menor grado de variantes.
Muestra de ello es que a la hora de interactuar nos sentimos parte de
una misma cosa. Uno puede enfatizar sobre la diferencia o similitud,
pero cuando hay sentimientos de familiaridad es porque obviamente hay
algo compartido , analiz�.
Otro aspecto interesante que hurg� el experto al hablar con el Caribe es
la manera en como ven los mismos puertorrique�os su historia, tomando en
cuenta su condici�n de Estado Libre Asociado de los Estados Unidos.
Los puertorrique�os ven su historia como algo aparte, como algo que
puede ser distinto del resto del Caribe, pero tambi�n distinto de la
historia de Estados Unidos. Puedo asegurar que a�n en momentos en los
que el nacionalismo cultural no era tan fuerte como ahora, la
historiograf�a puertorrique�a y la tradici�n siempre se han visto como
algo distinto .
Asimismo, al hablar sobre los lazos entre Cuba y Puerto Rico, el
historiador reafirma la singular cercan�a hist�rica de las dos islas,
pese a la proximidad geogr�fica que la relaciona a Rep�blica Dominicana,
lo que el historiador atribuy� entre otras razones al referente com�n de
ambos territorios.
Tras m�s de 40 a�os despu�s de irse ambas islas en direcciones
contrarias he visto como cada d�a se parecen m�s, pero cuando Cuba
decidi� lanzarse en direcci�n opuesta su referente fundamental, al igual
que para Puerto Rico, era Estados Unidos y de una u otra manera
seguir�an defini�ndose as�: dos sociedades frente a Estados Unidos. En
el caso de la Rep�blica Dominicana se encuentra un referente adicional y
es Hait�. Aclaro que esta es una versi�n corta de una respuesta mucho
m�s compleja , concluy� el analista, que puso como segundo elemento el
tema de las inmigraciones porque generan una ambig�edad de c�mo nos
vemos mutuamente y el surgimiento de las recientes relaciones
gubernamentales entre las dos islas.

Una agenda en honor a la Isla del Encanto
La IX edici�n del Festival Antropol�gico de Culturas Afroamericanas
continuar� el pr�ximo martes 26 de este mes con la presentaci�n de los
videos Adombe: presencia africana en Puerto Rico de Edwin Reyes,
galardonado en 1993 por la Unesco y Retrato en boricua de Ismael
Rivera , de Enrique Trigo, en horario de 8 a 10 de la noche.
La programaci�n continuar� hasta el d�a 3 de diciembre, a partir de las
8:00 de la noche, con la conferencia La gr�fica: logros t�cnicos y
compromisos pol�ticos en Puerto Rico . Este encuentro estar� a cargo del
artista puertorrique�o Miguel Trelles.
A esta programaci�n tambi�n se sumar� una sesi�n de videos dedicada a la
m�sica puertorrique�a producida por el Banco Popular de Puerto Rico y
dirigida por Paloma Suau. Todas las actividades tendr�n como escenario
el Centro Cultural de Espa�a.
