Subject: Re: Saul's "Pimientas outrageous' statement"

Dear colleagues,

Why is Saul getting so nerveous? There is an online (and totally transparent and polite on my side) discussion on the estimation of user figures of CUNET triggered by the questions of Larry Press trying to understand what figure was the more credible between the 2000 presented by CUNET and the 129 presented by Funredes. The subject may be
polemical for its implication, but is only a question of data and methodology.

The parenthesis about Jamaica was only to explain there figures WAS NOT included in our estimation (nor in Archie's traffic which served as basis). The only relevant question was the user figures. What have Saul to say on that very question?

The conduct which consists to extract few lines, out of context, read it its own way and extrapolate implications which were not contained in the words (nor in the mind) of the author is not exactly what one tends to consider "intellectual honesty". Saul says Pimienta "insinuates". Pimienta, as know well those who had read him, have the bad habit to say his point of view in a straightforward and open manner. Who is insinuating is Saul, insinuating and trying to provoke conflicts betbeen us and our colleagues network administrator of CUNET, where the need is for closer tight and cooperation.

Why is it not clear to you yet Saul, that in networking there is more than physical connectivity? Sensitizing decision makers, training users, building user communities, organizing networked applications in distance education, health or environment is an integral part of metworking and the contributions in these areas are perfectly accountable.

Besides the question of scientifical measurement of people making use of CUNET, it appears to me that what makes Saul so nerveous is the very concept of COOPERATION.

Does it occur to you, Saul, that cooperation means operation together with partners? Saying that several entities cooperate in one field or area does not reduce the role of any of them. AT THE COUNTRARY, it enhances it!

When will you, at last, learn to conjugate the word c o o p e r a t e?

Best regards to all,

And the public reiteration of the good will for cooperation from FUNREDES and REDID, with OAS, NSF, ISOC, UNDP and whatever bilateral or multilateral partners and, of course, intraregional cooperation partners (CUNET, UPR, CENIAI etc...).

Daniel Pimienta

PS: For the sake of clarity and to avoid room for insinuation,
I am copying, to all of you, the complete mails exchange between Larry and I (sent with copy to Saul, Archie and Miguel). .
