Background

The Mountain Forum was established in 1995 through international
collaboration from non-government organizations, universities, governments,
multilateral agencies, and the private sector. It is governed by a six
member International Board of Directors.

The Mountain Forum has successfully built upon existing networks to carry
out a wide array of activities connecting and empowering mountain
supporters throughout the world. It offers a unique opportunity to share
lessons from the field, and bring these lessons into policy discussions at
national and international levels. We invite you to participate.

Mission

The Mountain Forum promotes global action toward equitable and ecologically
sustainable mountain development. This is achieved through information
sharing, mutual support and advocacy. In order to achieve these objectives
the Mountain Forum uses modern and traditional communications, supports
networking and capacity building and encourages members to be proactive in
advocating sustainable development of mountain areas.

Membership

The Mountain Forum is an innovative global network composed of thousands of
people, professionals and organizations from over 100 countries. Membership
of the Mountain Forum is open to individuals and organizations concerned
with sustainable mountain development and conservation. No fees are
necessary to become a member of the Mountain Forum, nor does a member need
full Internet connectivity or e-mail.

The Mountain Forum's electronic information services include global,
regional and thematic e-mail discussion lists, focused electronic
conferencing, a calendar of events, and a rapidly growing on-line library
of mountain resources. Currently, over 9,000 documents are hosted on its
website www.mtnforum.org.
