Completely in agreement with Deirdre. I too have many things to do (thus I
responded to this email message now).
I will also add that the use of formats other than HTML for documents
makes automatic translation difficult. It�s annoying, and while handing me
an automatic translation of a document can be considered rude, I will have
to say that I believe that making it more difficult to get an automatic
translation is also rude.
Of course, I could build on the latter point and discuss the fact that I
do not like getting things in Microsoft formats, but that might be seen as
me simply being reactionary based on my personal opinions. However, I will
say that the OpenOffice XML format actually is quite easy to translate
compared to Microsoft�s comparatively large formats. From a practical
standpoint, if documents are to be published and translated, then I am of
the opinion that formats that are *accessible* for translation should be
used. This is secondary to my opinion about proprietary formats, and yet
to others who would dismiss my opinions on propritary formats, I can
guarantee that accessibility is a key part of participation.
Frankly, if it�s worth reading - it is worth making accessible. If it was
worth writing, I would hope that the author(s) considered it worth
reading. If the author is writing something that they do not consider
worth reading...
