My friend Jane King was in Toronto last week for the Caribbean-Canada
Literary Exposition. One of her readings (she is a poet) fell in the same
group with Nancy Morejon from Cuba. Srta Morejon insisted on reading her
poems in Spanish "I defend my right to read in Spanish", although the
organisers wanted her to read in English. She won. Jane volunteered to read
the English translations for her, and asked me to tell you that she felt
very privileged to do so.

The second quotation in my signature is ironic in this context - it was
originally spoken in, and about, Spanish!
