Dear Mistica,
Thank you for including me. Thank you for including me since 1999. You have
made me laugh, made me cry, taught me some Spanish and improved my French
:-), let me "meet" so many people I otherwise would not have known.
But now I have a complaint. Mistica is quadri-lingual, yet the very
important survey about Mistica's future (8 pages) together with its
methodology document (8 pages) were apparently available only in Spanish,
without even the blessing of the automatic translation system (for the
methodology at least). If I understand page 5 numbered paragraph 1
(methodology) correctly this was a deliberate policy decision.
I have responded to the survey in English - not to be difficult, or
imperialist :-) but because there was not enough time for me to read and
write in Spanish. I write this letter in English because it took years of
persuasion by Mistica to convince me that I could, and having been given a
right I feel that I should exercise it :-)
Many Mistic@s are distressed by the apparent hegemony of the English
language on the internet. I share that distress, but creating a Spanish
hegemony will not solve the problem.
Perhaps an important question which was omitted from the survey was about
Mistica's voice. In April at Juan Dolio there was the expressed intention
to reach out to the Caribbean (French and English speaking) and to Brazil
(Portuguese)
Does Mistica now intend to see itself as specifically a Hispanophone space?
Gran abrazos para tod@s
Deirdre
