At 04:16 31/07/2006:
This morning I watched part of the BBC's Hard Talk programme.
The person being interviewed is the current Archbishop of Armagh,
the person responsible for the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland.
I grew up in Northern Ireland.
His Grace argued forcefully against proposals for integration -
of the churches for reasons of theology, of the schools for
social reasons to do with tradition and identity. The reasons
all sounded valid.
However - more important than all those valid arguments seems
to me to be the issue of "them" and "us".
It's much more difficult to have a war with people you perceive
as "us".
I think that the empowerment of the new technologies comes not
from submitting reports from the field, but from the
possibilities the new technologies offer for "creating an
useness of them".
